When to bring in a drawback consultant

The moments a program needs a specialist.

Most drawback programs leave money behind not because the company is ineligible, but because the program was set up once and never revisited. These are the points where specialist drawback consulting pays for itself.

01

A new tariff hits your duty bill

Section 301 and Section 232

Each tariff program has its own drawback rules. Section 301 duties are recoverable under every provision. Section 232 duties on steel, aluminum, copper and automobile parts are recoverable only through manufacturing drawback. The program has to be built around the route that applies.

Choosing the right provision

Direct ID, substitution, manufacturing

Exporting the same goods, exporting similar goods matched at the 8-digit HTS, and exporting finished goods made from imports are three different claims. The right mix, and the right matching method, decides how much duty you recover.

Getting ready for CBP review

Built to survive an audit

A claim is only as good as the records behind it. We review your import, export and inventory records against what CBP expects, close the gaps before a review, and defend the claim if one comes.

A program that has not been reviewed

Up to 99% recoverable

Programs that match imports to exports in sequence strand duty under the lesser-of value rule. Re-running five years of history through Apollo, which weighs every compliant pairing, often finds recovery the original program missed.

Common questions

Duty drawback consulting, answered.

What does a duty drawback consultant do?

A duty drawback consultant works out where your company is entitled to a refund of import duties, taxes and fees, which drawback provisions fit your trade flows, and how to build a program that CBP will accept and audit cleanly. At Alliance the consultants are licensed U.S. Customs brokers who also prepare and file the claims, so the advice and the filing come from the same team.

Do I need a drawback specialist or will my customs broker handle it?

Most customs brokers file entries and treat drawback as a side service. A drawback specialist works only on drawback, across every provision and industry. The difference shows up in how much duty is recovered and how well a claim holds up under audit. Alliance has specialised in duty drawback since 2001.

When should a company bring in drawback consulting?

Common triggers are a new tariff that changes your duty bill, a new product line or export market, a move from direct identification to substitution, a manufacturing process change, an upcoming CBP audit, or a program that has been filing the same way for years without a review.

Can a consultant help with Section 301 and Section 232 tariffs?

Yes, and this is where provision choice matters most. Section 301 duties, including the 2026 forced labor action, are recoverable under every drawback provision. The Section 232 duties on steel, aluminum, copper and automobile parts are recoverable only through manufacturing drawback, so the program has to be built around that route.

How much of my duty can drawback recover?

Up to 99 percent of the duties, taxes and fees paid at import, on goods exported or destroyed within five years of importation. A free assessment of your import and export data shows what that means in dollars before you commit to anything.
